The creation of additional emirates in Kano State on Wednesday may not be the last turbulence coming the way of the Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II, as an ongoing probe by the state government’s anti-corruption agency could lead to charges being filed against the monarch . Sanusi’s status as the only first class emir in the state was whittled when the state government balkanized the emirate, carving out four new emirates and appointing first class emirs to rule them. The exercise which lasted only two days, fuelled speculations that the government was going after the emir over his rumoured support for the opposition during the recently concluded governorship election. The fresh investigation by the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission as well as the bid to appoint new first class emirs by the state assembly kick-started almost simultaneously last week. The Chairman of the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (AUTH) branch of the Medical And Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), Comr. Steve Oricha, has said the N30,000 new minimum wage approved by the Federal Government will not change the lives of workers. Comr. Oricha, who spoke with our reporter in Gwagwalada yesterday, said although the implementation of the new minimum was a good thing, it would not help the workers. He said, “Personally, I don’t think government has done workers any favour by introducing the N30,000 minimum wage.” He said labour unions had demanded for N56,000 and that for government to agree to pay N30,000, according to him, would not address the welfare challenges of Nigerian workers. He said when the minimum wage was fixed at N18,000, exchange rate was N170 to a dollar, and that today, a dollar exchanged for N350, and “so the N30,000 will not make any difference in the lives of workers.”  Oricha said the country had not been abl...

Geoffrey Anyanwu,  Awka Anambra  State House of Assembly has enacted a law making genotype test compulsory before marriage. The law known as Sickle Cell Disease Control and Eradication Repeal law, seeks to eradicate sickle cell anaemia in the state and set those living with it free from all kinds of oppression, abuse and exploitation. The bill passed on Tuesday was sponsored by the member representing Anaocha II constituency,  Charles Ezeani and 15 others. With the bill, parents and guardians in Anambra State risk imprisonment if they give out  their children or wards living with sickle cell anaemia in marriage without verification of a qualified sickle cell disease prevention certificate.  Also at risk of jail are priests, pastors and marriage registries that perform such holy matrimony. 17 others killed in Katsina Francis Sardauna in Katsina and Seriki Adinoyi in Jos Katsina State came under heavy fire of bandits Wednesday as the District Head of Daura, Alhaji Musa Umar, was abducted by four gunmen. Daura, the hometown of President Muhammadu Buhari, shared the discomfort with Gobirawa and Sabawa villages in Safana Local Government Area, where 17 persons were reported killed in a night attack by bandits who also injured scores of people. Said to be Buhari’s in-law, Umar, a former customs officer, is also said to be married to the daughter of the president’s sister. He is also reported to be the father of Fatima, wife of Col. Unidentified gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have attacked Girls Secondary School in Zamfara state and allegedly abducted unspecified number of people, BBC Hausa Service reports. According to the BBC report, the bandits stormed Government Secondary School, Moriki in Zurmi Local government area of the state on Wednesday night during a champions league match. A local source told BBC that during the attack, the bandits brandished weapons, shot sporadically on the air and killed one person in the town of Moriki before the attack on the school. A vigilante in Moriki also said that the bandits blocked roads leading to Moriki during La’asar prayer (3:30pm) before attacking the school in the evening. The vigilante disclosed that the bandits were able to abduct two teachers, four cooks but were not able to reach students hostels.
